I hope to be a game programmer when I get out of college, so technology will play a BIG part for me. Without technology, video games, among other things, wouldn't even exist today. I don't think people appreciate technology that much. Technology is what helps us live through life more easily, to get through diseases ravishing this world, protect ourselves using modern military technologies, etc.
What I'm doing will rarely change the world, but there's good money in it, so why not? If being a game programmer won't work out, I'll probably work in some other job involving computers, so technology will always be in my life, no matter what.
