System clock


A clock inside the computer.

Scanner


a device that scans an object, and turns it to an image.

Read-Only Memory


a type of memory that can only be read, and not written like RAM.

Random access memory (RAM)


The kind of memory used for storing programs and execute data.

Pointer


a small arrow on the screen that moves as you move the mouse.

Plotter


device that draws pictures on paper.

Output device


Any machine that can show information from a computer.

Optical storage devices


A device that can read media and turn it into a video.

Nonimpact printers


A printer that uses an ink jet system or any other type of system, just not a banging needle into paper.

Mouse


A pointing device that makes browsing through the computer or executing programs a lot easier.

Motherboard


the central circuit board and holds many of the important parts of the computer.

Main memory


physical memory that is inside a computer.

Instruction cycle (I-cycle)


The same thing as an Execution cycle, the time it takes for a program to execute a function.

Input device


A hardware device that sends information to the computer.

Impact printers


The oldest type of printing there is. Works by banging a head or needle against an ink ribbon to make a mark on the paper.

Execution cycle (E-cycle)


The time it takes for a program to execute a function.

DVD


an optical disc that stores media into it.

Controller


A device that transfers data from a computer to a peripheral device, which are things like a printer or keyboard, things that aren't in the computer itself.

Central processing unit


carries out the instructions of a computer program, and the computer's functions.

CD-ROM


A disk that can store large amounts of data.

Bit


the smallest unit of information on a machine.

American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)


the numerical representation of a letter or an action made by the computer.

Worksheet


a collection of cells where you actually keep and change the data.

Workbook


The MS Excel file in which you store related data.

Range


A range is a group of cells in a worksheet that have been highlighted.

Merge


To combine something with another.

Header row


the gray colored column containing the numbers used to identify each row

Gridlines


the gray lines that separate the cells, rows, and columns.

Filling


Auto filling in information.

Fill Handle


A small black dot or square in the bottom right corner of the active cell.

Descending order


Same as Ascending order, except the other way around.

cell reference


Identifies the location a cell or group of cells in the spreadsheet.

Acsending order


The order in how information is arranged, ascending order is arranged from lowest to highest.

Active Cell


A cell in a spreadsheet that is highlighted so you can enter data in it.
